Social Media is Giving Customers a New Voice

Every small business owner knows that in order to be successful you have to understand your customers. Getting inside the head and under the skin of your prospect customers, understanding what they feel and how they think is key to figuring out how to approach them, what to offer and ultimately sell what you’re selling.

This used to be done though official surveys and customer feedback. Today, social media is changing the game plan, giving customers a new voice and putting them in the driver’s seat.

Social Media is Giving Customers a New Voice

What used to be kept behind closed doors is now exposed on social networks and your brand perceptions, product preferences, customer experiences and complaints are out in the public view. Your customers now have a new voice and it’s time for businesses to recognize and embrace it.

How Social Media is Giving Your Customer a New Voice - BOCO Creative Blog

Some companies are better at this than others. Take Bank of America, GAP or Netflix, for example, and you’ll see how listening or ignoring your customers can directly influence your business’ bottom line.

  1. Bank of America – Changes in law that limited overdraft fees banks were able to charge their customers, along with other financial policies, led to BofA’s decision to impose a $5-a-month fee on all debit cards.  Customer backlash which started with an online petition and was fueled via social media sites led to the bank’s decision to retract the monthly charge. Unfortunately, by then, BofA’s reputation has been damaged and many customers moved their money to local banks and credit unions.
  2. Netflix – Last year the company decided to split its streaming and DVD programs into two separate packages, which would ultimately lead to a 62% price increase for those who wanted to keep both. Netflix customers felt betrayed an went beserk. Public outrage included people criticizing the decision, and the company, on Twitter, Facebook and blogs. Hundreds of thousands of customers promptly cancelled their subscription and the stock dropped 35%.
  3. GAP – In 2010 Gap decided to update their logo and THEN asked their customers opinion on the subject. The public outrage and ridicule was immediate and harsh. The new logo was generic, cheap-looking, disconnected and demonstrated lack of clear vision and creativity. GAP’s initial response and then a failed experiment to crowd source was a fiasco, ultimately leading to returning to the original logo.

Takeaways

  • Never change a business model or make major price adjustments without testing first.
  • Pay attention and promptly respond to customers’ opinion, including complaints.
  • Have customer communications created by professional copywriter.
  • Use customer ideas in the creative process.

Having your customers express their feelings about your company publicly can be unnerving if you’re faced with complaints. But you can’t hide from it.

Listening to what your customers say is the first step. What comes next is understanding and implementing change. These companies have done just that:

  • Walt Disney Company
  • IBM
  • Microsoft
  • Tiny Prints
  • Ford Motor Company
  • HMS National
  • Nike
  • Lifeline Screening
  • Palms Trading Company
  • MSC Industrial Direct

Small Business Blogging on a Budget

Small Business Blogging on a Budget - BOCO Creative Blog
Whether you own a brick-and-mortar store or a web-based business, blogging is a great way for small businesses to reach out to customers, engage target audience and market products or services.

While many small businesses understand the concept of blogging and are aware of the benefits, blogging is often viewed as requiring lots of effort and resources.

But you’d be surprised to find out that you can build a great company blog on a budget if you’re only willing to do the footwork. Here’s how.

Small Business Blogging on a Budget

  1. Start with a free blogging platform. If you can’t afford a self-hosted blog, head on to places that will host your blog for you for free. Places like WordPress.com, Tumblr, TypePad or Blogger are all solid free blogging platforms. While not optimal, especially from SEO perspective, this is a great way to connect with your customers at no cost to your business.
  2. Customize your blog to reflect your brand and company message. Not having the budget to hire a designer to customize your blog is no reason to settle for a generic, out-of-the-box blog design. Many blogging platforms offer multiple themes and customization options to make a business blog not only more visually appealing but reflecting your brand’s look and feel. Just do a quick search for Blogger or Thumblr templates and you’ll be flooded with hundreds of free themes ready for your review and often preview. What sets them apart are not only visual differences but also available features and customization details, so choose wisely.
  3. Upgrade to host your own domain. When you first sign up for a hosted blog, it will be hosted under the provider’s subdomain (i.e. yourblog.wordpress.com). Fortunately, many of those companies also offer options for users to host their own domains with a simple and inexpensive upgrade (often for less than $20/year). This is a must for businesses who want to look more professional and established.
  4. Integrate the blog into your business website. If you already have a website, integrating your new blog with the main site is a must. Some platform allow for seamless integration and the process can be quite easy so research your options before signing up.
  5. Create content, grow your business. Getting your blog off the ground can seem daunting, but things will get easier over time. Your main goal is to create quality content geared toward your target audience. Growing customer relationships and ROI is the ultimate reason many business get into blogging. But while you won’t notice the results immediately, if you’re persistent blogger the rewards for all your hard work will be significant.

Free blogging platforms provide a great opportunity for any small business on a tight budget to venture into the space of social media marketing.

Exploring new ways of growing their business through blogging and other inbound marketing avenues is a great way for any business to stay competitive and relevant.

Small budget is no excuse to miss out on this great opportunity.

New Custom WordPress Website Design & Implementation Completed

For the past couple of months I’ve been juggling multiple design projects one of which was the design and development of a custom WordPress website for a new business, All Roofing Solutions.

They were referred to me by another roofing company I’ve been in business with for the last 3 years, LGC Roofing.

Here is the landing page:
All Roofing Solutions WordPress website - landing page

One of the main objectives of this website was its ease of use so we concentrated on usability. In efforts to increase conversion we’ve strategically located various call to action buttons in multiple locations. We also placed contact information in plain sight and in multiple locations giving the visitor many opportunities to contact All Roofing Solutions.

Even the footer is designed with usability, SEO and ROI in mind.

The site also includes a lightbox gallery to showcase their work. The owner wanted to showcase authentic project photos that would earn him credibility. There’s also a blog integrated with the main site which will give All Roofing Solutions an opportunity to share their knowledge and experience.

We’re now in the process of finalizing some design details, setting up social media accounts and beginning of the initial marketing campaign to local home and business owners.

Go welcome All Roofing Solutions and take a look around. They’ve been a great design collaborator throughout the whole design progress and a great client to work with!
